Research, development and innovation are of vital importance in Group Matarromera, evidenced by the large investment (more than 4 million euros) that the company makes every year.
Through its R&D Department, the winery group has more than 30 different research projects under way, notably the following:
1. Commercial and food traceability:
The Wine Panel Test was created by means of a system of integrated sensors for organoleptic characterisation of wine.
In addition, a system of integrated winemaking management has been developed through the use of new technologies.
An automated system has also been developed for on-line checking of the bottling, labelling and storage process of the D.O. Ribera del Duero wines, with significant energy savings through the use of alternative energies.
2. Extraction of polyphenols from grape skins for use in cosmetics, food and parapharmacy.
During recent years, Matarromera has developed a system to extract all the polyphenols and antioxidants present in grape skins, in addition to many other products of great nutritional value.
The internationalisation of research has been promoted through participation in the 7th EU Framework Programme, developing alternative extraction systems (supercitric fluid extraction) to obtain antioxidants and products of high added value (EXTRANAT Project).
We have been researching into obtaining enriched functional products with wine polyphenols, with remarkable health benefits.
A project has also been developed for making bread and pastry products enriched with wine polyphenols, enormously beneficial to human health.
3. Automation and process improvement
Throughout 2008 a management system has been introduced into R&D, obtaining the UNE 166002:2006 Certification through the AENOR certifying agency.
Thanks to a research project, the bottling process has been optimised and the use of renewable energies has been extended
4. Wine dealcoholisation.
Matarromera has just launched the first premium alcohol-free wine in Spain, EMINASIN, which has been made possible thanks to the development of a system of vacuum evaporation through a Spinning Cone Column, which eliminates the ethanol in wine almost in its entirety.
In addition, we have installed a plant for dealcoholising high-range wines which will enable the Group to produce EMINASIN for sale.
5. Biotechnology and Biomedicine area.
We have created a biotechnology development based on the selection of winemaking processes and enological microorganisms responsible for improving the qualities of wines.
In addition, research has been done on improving the content of biogenic amines, such as Ochratoxin A and ethyl carbamate, based on soil analysis and optimisation of enological resources.
At the same time, we have developed various strategies and winemaking methods against climate change.
Finally, a series of natural antioxidant compounds from red grapes have been designed and developed for subsequent application in nutritional supplements and cosmetic and pharmacological products.
6. Use of alternative energies:
A study of residual lignocellulosic biomass from the Emina winery has been carried out with a view to transforming it to obtain thermal energy for heating water for the winemaking process.
7. Computer development and ICTs.
A series of ICT tools based on ERP, CRM, and other shortcuts have been implemented, aimed at improving the competitiveness of the various Matarromera Group companies.
8. Agronomic Research.
We have conducted various studies with multiple varieties of olive trees at the Emina Rueda winery in Medina del Campo (Valladolid).
We have also contracted an agronomic study of the soil types of the vineyards and the various recommendations for fertilisation.
9. Olive Oil.
Thanks to the special climatic conditions of the areas in which we have planted 400 hectares of olive trees (in Cigales, Rueda and Toro), we have investigated and improved the process of sustainable development of the olive tree in cold areas adaptable to climate change.
These are just some of the various research projects that Matarromera Group is carrying out at this time.
Only an unquestionable commitment to R&D and a complete, efficient team can make Matarromera a leader and an example to follow in the Spanish wine industry.
